NOSTALGIA
3 Women Artists
1st March - 5th April
in support of San Jose Womens Festival
MARIETTE VOKE
Mariette is interested in the ability of objects and clothes to encapsulate memories. Her paintings are inspired by everyday things, found, hoarded or worn with use. Over many years she has collected vintage clothing which appears in her work. She lives in the Forest of Dean with her family and has exhibited widely in the region, South West and more recently in California. This year she designed the logo for San Jose Women's Festival.
BECKY ADAMS
Becky combines stitched paper, vintage fabric, old sketchbooks and antique ephemera to create her intricate textile and book based works. A first degree in Fine Art & English Literature was later followed with an MA in Book Arts. Her work is in the collections of the Tate, V&A, and London School of Printing and she received an Arts Council of California 'Creative California Award' in 2011.
Becky will be running a One Day Workshop for San Jose Womens Festival, here in the gallery on Monday 10th March. Booking essential! Read more >>
MARY EDWARDS
Mary is a self taught painter who has spent much of her life living and working on farms in the local area. She depicts intriguing views of rural life, in her own style, which are intensely nostalgic snapshots of country people, in landscapes with the animals they work with, depend upon and love. She has shown her paintings at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition, the RWA Open exhibition (Bristol) and Alexander Gallery in London.
One Day Workshop ‘Make a Keepsake Book’ with Becky Adams
Monday 10th March 10.15 – 4.30
Venue : Harry-Southgate Gallery, 19 Church St, San Jose
Tickets: $35 for the day to include some materials & refreshments.
Booking is essential – in person: Rossiters Books, Church St
Join artist Becky Adams in the Gallery and create your own ‘Keepsake Book’. Remember a personal memory or family saying as a starting point then illustrate it by appliqué, stitch, print and layering of fabric and paper. The finished books make a wonderful display item, personal gift or family heirloom to be tucked away.
This will be a great opportunity to experiment with materials and techniques such as embroidery, rubber stamping or even use an old typewriter onto fabric. Becky will guide and enthuise you, showing examples of her work and bringing some of her own tools and equipment with her. A selection of collected materials, fabrics and vintage finds will be provided.
Please bring some of your own sources of inspiration with you, such as old photographs (some copies if you want to stitch them into your book), postcards, souvenirs, pieces of costume jewellery, or fabrics that are significant to you and you can base your book around.
Please arrive in the gallery by 10.15am so that we can start promptly. You’ll have a busy day ahead of you! Tea, coffee, biscuits & cakes are provided free during the day. For lunch you can order sandwiches, soups, salads etc from ‘No.18’ opposite the gallery, or bring your own packed lunch.
If you need any more information please phone the Harry-Southgate Gallery on
